Camp Hoodie Knitalong Preview!

Hi Spud & Chloë Friends,

I am happy to announce today that I will be hosting a new knitalong for the Camp Hoodie vest that I designed for the very first printed pattern collection for Spud & Chloë back in the summer of 2009. Today is just a brief post to let you know about the upcoming knitalong so you can start to gather your materials if you’d like to participate with me. This is a fun and satisfying little knit and the pattern is already written. This knitalong will be a lot simpler than having everyone write their own pattern like we did last time. With this being said…

You can already see that I modified my original design a little bit here and there for my second go-round. I don’t know if any of you feel this way but it is difficult sometimes to knit the same thing twice, especially when it is a garment. I didn’t change much and actually leaving off the hood was the main change. Boy did that make it go even faster than the original. I left the hood off because I want to wear this under my winter coat without the added bulk of a hood.

One other thing I changed is that I left out the waist shaping. I personally don’t like snug knitwear but that’s probably due to my age a little bit (or maybe due to too much pie over Christmas). You can work it either way.

Merri, a Spud & Chloë staff member, is making the Camp Hoodie for her daughter and has added a zipper to the front. She has kindly drafted up all of her pattern changes and I will be making that available for you in pdf format for you if you are interested in this modification.

I changed out the fair isle pattern for a stitch design in my favorite stitch dictionary of all times, Super Stitches Knitting. I highly recommend this book. It’s a winner and I have great plans to keep using it. If you’d like to try a new color work design you should pick up a copy of this book or any other book with color work stitch patterns to plug in. I’ll give you more details later in the specific design I used in this version of the camp hoodie.

I made my Camp Hoodie in the medium size. It fits so great. I used 4 hanks of Rootbeer, 1 hank of each of Splash, Ice Cream and Cider. All of these great colors are in the Spud & Chloë Sweater. Let me tell you that this yarn is so wonderful for color work of any kind. It is crisp and clean and the colors really pop. What a joy to work with.

Click here to view all of the colors in Sweater! You’ll see that you really can’t go wrong. The color choices are all so beautiful.

Okay, that’s enough of me in my brand spanking new vest. I am pretty excited about the fit and the wearing possibilities. A piece like this is so right up my wardrobe alley. It couldn’t be any better. Click here to see all of the pattern and yarn details and the original made in a couple of colorways. We will be sticking to the pattern sizes but that doesn’t mean you can’t make changes on your own. However, please kindly note that I won’t be re-writing the pattern for individuals during the knitalong. Remember all of those skills we learned from the Easy Raglan Knitalong? Now is the time to put them to use! You can adjust lengths, sizes, armhole depth, edgings, neckline shaping, stitch patterns, etc. The sky is the limit.

On a sidenote, the fact that I have no shame about the photos I post of myself for thousands to view is not lost on me. Sigh. I am no professional model by a long stretch and I’ve come to accept that. But maybe, just maybe I could slap on a little make-up now and again. You’ll just have to live with me and try to focus on the knits only please. lol.

We won’t start for a good couple of weeks so you all can get organized with your pattern and materials. The pattern for the Camp Hoodie is available at local yarn shops carrying our yarn and products or at many, many big and small online yarn shops. Please click here to see our stockists list. You can also use a Google search to find out where you can purchase the pattern and yarn.

Note: The pattern is not available as a pdf to download. It is a pattern from our printed pattern line that is sold in local yarn shops and online yarn shops only.

Scrunchy and yummy are two words that come to mind.

I hate to play favorites but Sweater is my favorite Spud & Chloë yarn. You can make anything happen with Sweater. It is a dream to work with and the best for fair isle or striping lots of colors. I simply adore Sweater.

Aren’t these colors fantastic together? With a pair of jeans and my brown clogs and a crisp white blouse underneath? The. Best. This is my new uniform for almost every occasion. I don’t dress up much.

Okay, let me know if you are in! There is no deadline to sign up but I’d love to know if you will join me in a couple of weeks to knit the Camp Hoodie with our Spud & Chloë friends as a group. We will have so much fun.

Above is the original Camp Hoodie that is featured in the pattern. It comes with directions for the fun hood.  The turned hem around the hood provides a fun peek of color and the ties and poms are always a plus in my book. There is a simple checkered fair isle pattern that is incredibly fun and simple. I added some simple embroidery to spice it up after the fact.

I’ll be back in a short while with the free pattern for this little gem for you, too. When I first started making the Camp Hoodie, I made the Camp Hoodie Hat as my gauge and color work swatch. I will get this pattern in order so you can do the same if you’d like. As far as the yarn amount is concerned, if you’d like to make this hat you may want to order an extra hank of the main color. However, if you are leaving off the hood on your vest, just order the original amount listed in the pattern and then you will have enough for the hat along with the vest!

Love you, dearies! I’ll be back soon….

Oh goodness, I do love that! I especially like your original and the hood would be great for both my girls (25, & 24). It is my quest to start earlier for Christmas and each year I’ve been making a “Power of the Hale Women” matching scarf for all of us. The Power part comes in when one of us needs the strength of each other so we, who live in 3 different states, call each other and say “put it on”. If I start w/the kal, maybe I can have 3 done by Christmas 2011! Hmmmm. Seriously thinking about htis one! I think I will show it to our little local group and see if we can have a mini kal long, in person as well as the one on the computer. I wish more local stores carried Spud and Chloe….I shop a lot in Plymouth Michigan at Michigan Custome Boutique and Fine Knits and Jonesville’s Knits-n-Knacks. Happy New Year, happy new projects!!

  11. January 4, 2011 at 12:16 pm Kathy S says:

I wonder how it would look if the fair isle was up across the top, near the shoulders instead? Some of us don’t need attention called to the middle part of our middle and that would bring the focus up a bit.

    • January 4, 2011 at 12:24 pm sanderson says:

Ummm… you could place the fair isle anywhere but since it is a v-neck and the top section up by the shoulders is worked back and forth that might be tricky. I am sure it would be possible.

The other good option is to simply leave out any colorwork and make it one color maybe putting a a different color right on the edging of the rib for a little interest. Something like that might be your best bet.

      Good thoughts, thanks.

  12. January 4, 2011 at 1:43 pm Kelly says:

    Hi Susan!
I’m thinking about joining! I have wanted to do a knit along, but am nervous about spending a lot of time on a sweater and then not getting the size right! Maybe a vest would be the perfect pre-sweater project!
    Kelly :)

vests rock! cute and fast and not as big of a commitment.

  13. January 4, 2011 at 2:59 pm Niki says:

I am seriously thinking about joining. Just today I was dreaming of trying out fair isle knitting, and I already have the pattern at home. I think the vest would probably be a good way for me to go. Easier to wear to the office than a hood!

    • January 4, 2011 at 3:09 pm sanderson says:

Vests are fast and fun and great to wear! Welcome to the kal!

  14. January 4, 2011 at 3:06 pm Karen says:

  16. January 4, 2011 at 4:01 pm Dana says:

I love the modified version of this pattern as far as colorwork and waste shaping are concerned. But I am a sucker for a hood. I am going to try and do both.

    • January 4, 2011 at 4:33 pm sanderson says:

      easily done!

  17. January 4, 2011 at 4:40 pm Terrie says:

Beautiful vest!! I’ve always loved the Camp Hoodie, but I really love the modifications you’ve done as well! That is a great stitch design and the colors are perfect. The Camp Hoodie Hat is super cute, too. I can’t wait for the pattern to be released :)

    • January 5, 2011 at 10:44 am sanderson says:

The stitch pattern I used on the newer version is in the book, Super Stitches Knitting, my favorite stitch dictionary. I love the colors, too.

  18. January 4, 2011 at 7:41 pm Laura says:

I’m in:-)I was just trying to decide on my next “big” project (Yes that means that I am working on several “little” UFOs)!I already have 7 skeins of moonlight so that will be my main color and I will order 1 skein each of the new colors; waterslide, barn and igloo. Can’t wait to start! Do we need to order the original pattern or will it part of the KAL info?

    • January 4, 2011 at 7:46 pm sanderson says:

yes, you need to purchase the printed pattern from your local yarn shop or online. we will provide info. on the modifications that we do along the way if anyone is interested.

  19. January 4, 2011 at 9:50 pm Jennie says:

You’re among friends, so you’re welcome to go bare-faced as much as you want. It’s definitely the look I’m most comfortable with, too.

I’m considering joining the KAL, as I really like the vest, and I’d like to try fair isle. However, I haven’t finished my raglan from the last KAL yet! Life tends to get in the way of my knitting. Even if I don’t join in, I’ll definitely be interested in the discussions because I would like to knit it.

    Thanks,
    Jennie

okay, dorothy!!! i am so glad you are in and wanting to move on to different projects. that’s what keeps it all fun.

  22. January 5, 2011 at 6:20 pm Beth says:

I am in. I’ve been on quite the knitting streak with your patterns lately so I might as well add this one to my list! I’ve recently completed your turtle hat, the happily ever after mitts and hat, ribbit the frog, and I’ve got the twister cowl on my needles right now. One quick question. Will we need to buy the book that contains the alternate design as well as the actual vest pattern, or will you be providing that as part of your pattern modifications? Looking forward to the KAL. It will be my first!

    • January 5, 2011 at 7:07 pm sanderson says:

Yay! Beth, thanks for joining in. I am assuming you are talking about the fair isle stitch pattern. I am recommend that book (Super Stitches Knitting) so highly and I am planning on using it a lot more in the future so If you are up for getting the book you should.

I have to check on replicating the chart out of the book. I know it is a stitch pattern that is okay to use in other designs but I want to make sure it is done correctly. I will get back to you on that.

  23. January 5, 2011 at 8:31 pm Sarah P. says:

I’ve been thinking about your awesome vest all day, and so has my DH (after I showed it to him). I think I want to attempt it for him…are you going to be giving tips on how to make it just like yours, fair isle pattern and all? love love love!

    • January 6, 2011 at 7:55 am sanderson says:

Yes and I am glad you are joining in! It would be a very handsome vest for a man. I am recommending people purchase the book, Super Stitches Knitting, for the fair isle pattern and the 300 other awesome stitch patterns in this book. It is my favorite. I will check into how I can share the colorwork pattern on here, too.

  26. January 6, 2011 at 1:26 am Debbie B says:

I am looking into this and will let you know. I wanted to share a funny story that I thought you might appreciate. My daughter was hounding me to come up with a few gift ideas for Christmas, my mind was a complete blank this year, so I said “well I do have an Amazon “wish list”, why don’t you look there.” Christmas day comes and she starts about my wish list, its about 10 pages long and she asked “Why in the world do you have a pink rubber ball on your wish list?” I started laughing and said it’s for a pattern in my queue, she just did NOT get it…non-knitters never do.

    • January 6, 2011 at 7:53 am sanderson says:

Hah! That is so funny. I am making another toy with the same rubber ball very soon so you may want to order two!

  27. January 6, 2011 at 6:21 pm Michelle Grosch says:

I am a big yes to this knitalong. Absolutely LOVE the vest!

  28. January 6, 2011 at 7:35 pm Claudia says:

I’ve been dithering since I first saw this post — but I did place an order for the pattern and supplies, so probably knew I’d join. This will be my first KAL, first adult garment, and first fair isle. Thanks for getting me on the road to fulfilling a 2011 goal to stretch a bit. Looking forward to the fun!

  29. January 6, 2011 at 9:56 pm Ashley says:

I’m going to sit out for the knitalong (not feeling that brave!), but wanted to say I’m so excited for the pattern for that hat. I have a little boy, so I’m always looking for cute hat patterns!

  30. January 7, 2011 at 3:28 am Mary Allen says:

I am IN. This will also be my first KAL. And I, too, love your modifications. I hope that you will share with us the fairisle detail on your vest. I’ve already picked out my color combination for the fair isle. And I’m hoping that with your guidence and KAL help, knittin the vest without the hood should be pretty easy, as I have knitted vests before. I love your patterns, blog and YARN!

i love the version of the sweater/vest as you are waering it! will instructions be available for this option as well?

  33. January 9, 2011 at 10:52 pm Sharon imler says:

I loved the raglan kal, I’m in. I’m thinking since I am bigger busted, I might not want the color work so high. I knownwe can change things, but what is the thought on that. My topdown kalmis out of sweater. After it is washed will it stop pilling so much between the arms and body.

    • January 10, 2011 at 7:14 am sanderson says:

You could place the color work wherever you’d like. Lower would be fine.

Hmmm… I haven’t had much trouble with pilling and Sweater. It may help after it is washed.

  34. January 12, 2011 at 10:20 pm Veronica says:

I left a comment on today’s post but again I CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE THIS…I bought everything over christmas. oh, what is the ease for this pattern it looked fitted?

    • January 12, 2011 at 10:28 pm sanderson says:

Yay, Veronica! I am excited to start , too. I made mine to 0-ease, or made to my measurement. It would work any way you’d like it to with negative, 0 or positive ease.

  35. January 15, 2011 at 11:37 am Hope says:

As I understand from postings , the chart will be available for the vest you are wearing, just not pdf form….first kal, and I love the vest…and sweater yarn……

    • January 15, 2011 at 12:03 pm sanderson says:

No, the chart is in the book, Super Stitches Knitting by Karen Hemingway. If you want to change out the fair isle pattern I have suggested this as a great resource to find charts but there are many other fair isle stitch pattern books to choose from!

I made it to our LYS this weekend and now have everything I need to join in the fun. The balls of yarn are on my dining room table, and every time I walk by I find myself smiling! The body is moonlight, with icecream, splash and pollen for the colorwork. Swatching today!
